Guidelines for pathologic diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma: 2012 update of the consensus statement from the International Mesothelioma Interest Group

4 September 2012 1,912 views 2 Comments

For mesothelioma (two panels on left), immunohistochemical stains for calretinin (top) and cytokeratin 5/6 (bottom) are diffuse and strong. This differentiates mesothelioma from lung cancer; for two lung cancers (two panels on right), the same stains show focal reactivity only.

This publication represents an update to the iMig guidelines that were first published in 2009, following the iMig meeting held in Chicago (Oct. 2006). This update is meant to be a practical guide for pathologists and presents consensus views on diagnosis and the common pitfalls to be avoided.

One question, I have a friend who has been diagnosed with Asbestos related disease and has a fluid buildup in his pleura area of his lung. He has seen a specialist who suggested that he have a biopsy done on the fluid but has since changed his mind in saying there is not enough fluid to make it worth while. My question knowing the seriousness of early diagnosis for mesothelioma. how much fluid does he have to have to make this a requirement? Thank you for your reply.
